Withamside United Parish – celebrating all that is good and of God within our community.
Welcome to the Withamside United Parish, named for the River Witham, which meanders through or around our eight villages. We are home to six formal churches in Aubourn, Bassingham, Carlton le Moorland, Norton Disney, Stapleford and Thurlby, and one informal cafe-style church in Witham St Hughs.
Whether you are looking for the times of church services or to enquire about baptism or a wedding we hope that you find what you are looking for on this website. If not, please feel free to get in touch via email or phone (01522 788652). www.withamsidechurches.org.uk

WITHAMSIDE UNITED PARISH CHRISTMAS SERVICES
We are having to make some changes to our Christmas programme of events mainly caused by an increase in Covid 19 cases in our local primary schools but also because of the unknown impact of the new Covid variant. Bassingham Primary School have cancelled their Christmas concert in St Michael’s Church and are now holding it in school.
The two events that cause the most concerns are Christingle and the Pop Up Nativity. Both of these services involve mixing children who do not wear masks with parents and grandparents in the confined space of St Michaels Church with often up to 150/200 attending. This is a lethal mix for spreading the virus.
Jon and Ingrid have organised for a shortened version of the Christingle service to be held outside which will be much safer.
We will have to cancel the Pop Up Nativity as there is no way this could be held outside.
As it stands, all other services and Carol singing events will continue as planned. The Carol singing is all outside and the Christmas services are no different to our normal Sunday services. We are continuing to ask people to wear masks or face visors in church as we have done now for the past few weeks. The Bassingham Choir concerts will also continue as planned.
Unless there is further advice and guidance from the Government we hope that the above arrangements will stand.
Would you please do your best to make these changes and arrangements known to your local communities.

KEEPING IN TOUCH
As you know our Rector, the Revd Dee Freeman, has now retired. Dee has made a tremendous impact on the Withamside United Parish over the past five years. We are very sad to lose her and her husband Michael who also worked hard to support the life of the Parish.
The Withamside United Parish now moves into what is known as an interregnum. We will probably not get a new Rector for some time. However, our worship of God and our care for each other in our communities continues. We have re-introduced a pattern of services which now includes a Morning Prayer each month and Communion services at Thurlby and Norton Disney once a month on a rota basis between the two churches. Please look very carefully at the services for the month to ensure that you do not miss the ones you wish to attend.
There are certainly challenges ahead but we have a faithful team of people who will do their best to ensure that the life of the Church continues to meet the needs of our local communities and that the Christian message and the love of Christ is made available to all.
All the main contacts for the Withamside United Parish are listed so please do not hesitate to contact any of us if you have a particular need or enquiry.

PLEASE PRAY FOR COP26
The UK’s presidency of the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) which was held in Glasgow this year continues until the next COP to be held in Egypt next November. The COP26 summit brought parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. 192 world leaders gathered in Glasgow to discuss how to tackle the climate crisis.
The decisions they made will affect everyone, but will have the biggest consequences for those experiencing and battling the devastating impacts of the crisis.
Please continue to pray for those who are carrying out changes of policy that were agreed and also take a moment to consider what action we can take ourselves. Each one of us can make some simple changes to reduce our own environmental footprints.
Prayer is essential!
The former head of the UN talks wrote an open letter of thanks after the Paris COP, which started “For those who prayed …” recognising the role prayer played at those talks, so …
A Prayer for the COP26 climate summit and it’s ongoing work:
We praise your name with all you have created.
You are present in the whole universe,
and in the smallest of creatures.
We acknowledge the responsibilities you have placed upon us
as stewards of your creation.
May the Holy Spirit inspire all political leaders at COP26 as they
seek to embrace the changes needed to foster a more sustainable society.
Instil in them the courage and gentleness to implement fairer solutions
for the poorest and most vulnerable,
and commit their nations to the care of our common home.
We ask this through Our Lord Jesus Christ your Son.
